June 13, 2010: Parents and children came to campus with bags large and small full of toys and books to sell and trade at the “low-carbon flea market.” Taking up their market booths from 9:00am, families set up their wares in attractive displays of all sorts of items, plus specially prepared snacks! It wasn’t long before the area was turned into a bustling market with children bargaining, trading, and making deals with each other for toys, English and Chinese books, and all sorts of curios. Everyone had lots of fun buying, selling, and trading while practicing practical math skills! The market wrapped up around 11:00am with all going away with new items and lots of smiles. We learned a great deal about conservation and sharing at our model market, in addition to building skills in business and arithmetic. We’re looking forward to making the flea market a regular event.
